Hypoparathyroidism (HPT) is characterised by hypocalcaemia and impaired renal phosphate excretion and calcium conservation. Oral calcium supplements and calcitriol can improve serum calcium levels but lack the physiologic effects of PTH on renal reabsorption of calcium.
